Wearing and removing them safely
Regular polish is the gentlest route. If you choose acrylics, note that, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, the natural nail must be filed until it feels rough, which thins it and makes it weaker.
For gel polish, the AAD says acetone is the most effective way to remove it at home. Cleveland Clinic notes that careless removal can temporarily damage nails, with cracking and peeling the most common issues.
